Title: Active Visual Analytics

Abstract: By integrating techniques from machine learning and visualization together, visual analytics enables the effective discovery of the underlying patterns from the data. However, the inherent gap between machine learning and visualization limits the user’s exploration. In this talk, I will advocate active visual analytics, where the user is not only allowed to interact with the extracted pattern but also can incorporate his prior knowledge into pattern extraction. I will share my experience on how to use active visual analytics for volume data exploration, high-dimensional data visualization, and shape analysis. Finally, I will discuss several remaining open challenges for active visual analytics.

Bio: Dr. Yunhai Wang completed his bachelor degree in three years at the Southwest University in 2005 and then gained his Ph.D. degree from Supercomputing Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011. During his PhD study, he was a visiting student at the University of Minnesota, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Since 2011, he joined the Visual computing Center, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, and is currently an associate professor. His research deals with the development of visualization and computer graphics techniques that help people see and understand the data.
